Rotavirus infection in under 6 years old children with acute diarrhea

Rota virus, the most common diarrhea pathogen in children in all the world, causes approximately one-third of diarrhea associated hospitalizations and 1000000 deaths per year. The etiology of acute diarrhea was studied in 171 children under 6 years of age between September and March 1993, from Ali Asghar hospital of Zahedan . 83 hospitalized and 83 healthy children in similar age groups served as controls. Rotaviru.s was found in 29.2% of patients ,9.6% and 3.8% of controls respectively, with the highest detection rate occurring in the 19-24 month age group 55.6% and declining beyond 31-36 months of ages in patients 82% and controls 87.5% . The rate of rota virus infection was highest during August and September respectively 40% and 39.5% and lowest during December 11.1% .There were significant differences between ages, motherʹs education, and number of family with rota virus infection diarrhea . Rotavirus detection in relation to different feeding habits and sexes showed no differences.
