PHENOMENOLOGY OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FACADE AND THE EVOLUTION PROCESS OF ITS EXPECTATIONS

The basic hypothesis of this essay declares that the main reason of the disorder in our building facades lies in the inattention to the expectations of these facades formed gradually through the history. The mentioned expectations would be listed as: Protection of the habitants against the external threats; Transition between exterior and interior spaces; Representation of the personality, social position and credibility of the building possessor or designer; Acceptance of an element role and responsibility within the overall urban realm. Although the disorder in facades is not limited to the residential buildings and it is the problem of all building types, the superfluity of urban housing and its great influence on the townscape make the problem so critical in this field that seems to be reasonable enough to allocate the subject of this essay to discuss on it. First of all, the paper illustrates the reasons suggested by the critics relating to the problem. In this way, the evolution process of the facade is dealt with to help to the better evaluation of the subject. This research has been done in oriental societies parallel to the occidental ones. Finally, a review on the main notes suggested by the experts is presented and the nessecity of fulfilling the four mentioned expectations of facades at the same time is confirmed in the conclusion of the article.
