Labor - Use Efficiency in Iranian Banking Industries

This study considers measurement of labor-use efficiency of 9 Iranian Banks during 1988-1997. Cobb-Douglas frontier cost function is used for this purpose. Two alternative models are considered. One assumes that bank characteristics directly influence the degree of technical inefficiency while the other assumes that they influence the shape of the technology. Maximum likelihood method is used to estimate parameters of the models and predict labor-use efficiency for each bank. The results obtained when using these two models are compared. The sensitivity of efficiency measures with respect to different model specifications is also analyzed. Empirical results show that most of the banks are operating at high level of efficiencies. The overall mean efficiency is about 70%, indicating that, on average, there exists potential for an increase in labor efficiency of 30%.Bank-e Tejarat is found to operate most efficiently.
