Effects of Cucumis melo fruit skin, Citrullus vulgaris fruit skin, Alhaji manifera arial parts, Zea mays tuft ethanolic extracts on solution of human uric acid kidney stones

Urolithiasis is a worldwide problem, sparing no geographical, cultural, or racial groups. Second only to calcareous stones in prevalence, is uric acid calculi. Uric acid stones can result from either hyperuricosuria, or acidic urine pH, or both. In Iranian tra ditional medicine, many plants are used for solving or excreting kidney stones. In the present study, effects of Cucumis melo fruit skin, Citrullus vulgaris fruit skin, Alhaji manifera aerial parts, Zea mays tuft ethanolic extracts on solution of human uric acid kidney stones were studied. The human kidney stones were obtained in different kidney operations. After powdering, they have been mixed with ethanolic extracts of plants and saline, as vehicle of extract, in separate tubes and kept at 37 °C for 6 days. Then, they were centrifiiged and uric acid concentrations were measured in their supernatants. The results showed that the ethanolic extracts of plants decreased uric acid concentration in comparison to saline significantly. The extract of Alhaji manifera aerial parts was more potent than others in decreasing uric acid concentration. So, all of the plants especially Alhaji manifera are good candidates for treating uric acid nephrolithiasis.
