Effect of polluted air on structure and ultrastructure of pollen grains in two species of Ulmus and their allergenic comparison

Ulmus is a member of the Ulmaceae family. The flowers have both functional male and female parts. Flowers appear in winter before leaves growth. Pollination in this plant is at the end of winter for two weeks. In this research, studies have been done on pollen structure and the rate of allergic properties in pure and polluted pollens. Pollens were collected and some of them were affected with polluted air. The studies which were done by cytolyses method and SEM, on pollen grains showed the difference in the pollen size and the number of pores in both species. In U. campestris pollen has 4 pores but U. glabra has 5 pores. The allergic effects of the pollenʹs extract with hypodermic injection and eye test on the experimental sensitized guinea pig has been examined. 12 hours after injection, blood factors such as blood sugar, IgE and eosinophil have been measured. Comparison among there factors showed that all extracts have allergic properties and extracts of U. campestris showed more allergic effects. According to the studies of pollen morphology and the rate of allergic properties in polluted pollens, pollens showed morphological disorders and their allergic properties were more severe.
