The Comparison of sport orientation of athletes in group and individual sports and its relation with sport participation motives

The purpose of this study was to compare sport orientation of athletes of individual and group sport and to determine its relation with participation motives. Subjects of this research include athletes of Khorasan Razavi teams (N: 360).From this subjects, 150 girlʹs athletes and 150 boyʹs athletes were randomly selected for individual sports and group sports. It has been used sport orientation questionnaire (SOQ) of Gill and Deter (1988) for evaluating sport orientation and participation motivation questionnaire (PMQ) of Gill and et al (1983) for evaluating participation motivation in sport . The results show that there are significant differences between athletes sport orientation is group sports and individual sports . As athletes of individual sports were more competitive (pʹ=0/027) than athletes of group Sport and were win oriented (p;o;O/021). But group sportʹs athletes were more goals oriented than individual sportʹs athletes (p;o;OI034). Among three components of sport orientation in individual sports , competitiveness component is determined as conquering component and goal orientation component is conquering component in group sport . Also, the results of correlation showed that there are a significant relation between competitiveness, win orientation and goal orientation components with motivation components (p<0/05) .
