Background: To erad icate a problem such as dru g abuse , we ne ed thorou gh knowl edge
of the problem and its ep idemiolog ica l as pec ts. In response to increasing ecs tasy abuse
among youth, as noted by the increase in related health issu es at emergency cl in ics, we
performed this epidemiologic stud y on ecs tasy use in Te hran.
Methods: In this cross-sec t iona l s tudy , includ ing 1,903 youth aged 15-25 years, at
differ ent co ffee sho ps in Te hran, Iran , subjects filled out quest ionnaires to evaluate the
preval ence of ecs tasy use with regard to gender , age, family income, level of education,
psychol ogical state (Bec k test), acut e complications of ecs tasy use, as we ll as manner and
place of ecs tasy use and reason for repeated ecstasy use. In formation was ga tbered from
September 2004 to Janu ary 2005, using simple non prob able sampling .
Results: The pre va lence of ecstasy abu se among our study populati on was 1~. 5 %, which
meaningfully con-elated wi th ge nder (male), educa tion le vel (undergraduate degree) ,
famil y income (high), dru g abuse and Beck test score (high) . The mean age of ecstasy
abusers was 21.3 years (SD: 2.65), whi ch wasnʹt s ta tistica lly differ ent tha n the study
popul ation as a whole and the port ion that did not use ecs tasy . Tablet was the most
common form of ecs tasy usage (97 . 1%) , In this study population, 9 1.4% had heard of the
ecs tasy name, and 83.7% were familia r with its use. The most commo n site of usage was
in parti es (85.7%) and in group form s (84%). Of all the user s, 30% sta ted the reason for
rep eat ecs tasy use was their friendsʹ insisten ce, 38.8% expressed emotiona l need, 37.7%
had no reaso n, wherea s 6.6% fel t a pbysical need and 1.7% rep eatedl y use d ecs tasy to
prevent withdrawal symptoms
Conclusion: Som e stud ies have reported that drug abu sing friend s are the basic cause of
dru g abuse . In th is stu dy, the ecs tasy user s admi tted that the in fluc nce of frie nds and
emo tional need were the ca uses of their repeat lise . Remark ably, these subjects rep ort
withdrawal symptoms with ecs tasy use. Most importantly, families have to consi der the
rel atio nships and emot ional needs of thei r children. The statistica l di fference between
Beck test scores betw een ecs tasy users and the non-users place d them in two cl inic ally
different psycholog ica l gro ups . The ecs tasy users were in gro ups that defin itely needed
psychol ogical co nsu ltation and non-user s were in the slightly dep ressed gro up. These
psychological aspect of dru g ab use exp ressed here is an alarm .
