Investigating Sulphate Binders Replacement for Phosphate Binders in Tundish Plasters

One of the main reasons/or lire blocking and sticking of the expendable leyer in ʹ"ndi~ʹ/1 plaster to tlte permanent taver and the subsequent in crease in refractory consumption and associated costs is ʹhe use 0/low-melting phosphate binders. At high temperatures ;/1 continuous casting of steet, phosphate binders provide low-melting point melts whit:" COWl! reactions between ʹhe two consuming and permanent layers, MI that deskulfing becomes difficult amI ʹhe permanent layer is damaged. In this work, the using sutpnote binders such a,ʹ! suipb amie acid "lid sufpllUtes of aluminum, magnesium, ammonium, sodium, potassium, and calcium are studied as substitute binders. Some of tire ptaster properties manipuluted by these different binders, namely cold crushing ftlrellgl1l(CCS), Bulk Density (B.D), and Apparent Porosity (AP%). were measured according 10ASTM. •Studies by SEM and XRlJ .showed th at magnesium sutpteate ",ʹOuld be the bestselection os a binder in tun dish plaster. This binder provides strengtl. at low temperatures, hUIdissociates ItI MgO and SO] 01high temperatures. SO./ evaporates and MgO is all oxide with a high melting point tltat does not react wilh tlre host oxide, u,\ʹuull}ʹ MgO. No melting or reaction occurred and deskulting was easy without any damage 10II,e permanent layer.
