Introduction: Population and family planning course is presented for different universitv disciplines in
order (0 promote studentsʹ c.Hvareness towardfamily planning issues. This study lvas performed to determine
the role uf population and familv planning course in knowledge and attitude offemale BS (Bachelor ojʹ
Science) students o]ʹ Tahriz University toward family planning issues, compare the achieved knowledge in
different groups ofstudents, and determine their attitude toward the gender ofthis courseʹs teacher.
Metbods: III this descriptive cross-sectional studv, 336 students were selectedfrom al! Female BS students
entered into Tabri: Universitv ill the years 2004 and 2005, through multistage sampling me thud in the year
2007. A questionnaire in two sections 0( knowledge and attitude, each including three subjerts offamily
planning, family organization, and demography H-ʹGS distributed among them. Data uʹcz.c analyzed by SPSʹS
software using descriptive statistics, Tstest, T independent test, and ANOr:1.
Results: Comparing the knowledge scores offamily planning, family organization, and demography of
hlUght students which respectively were 1.66. 8.04, and 7.88, to those of untaught students which were
respectively, 0.58, 4.28, and 3. 76, shuwed a significant difference. Also the attitude scores oftaught students
in the same subjects were respectively, 21.30, 2210, and 21.20 and 0/ untaught students were respectively,
19.26,20.02, and 19.79, which their comparison revealed a significant difference. But no sign if/calli difference
was nh....·crved between the achieved knowledge ofstudents in di/krent educational groups. Mostfemale
students preferredfemale teacherfor this course.
Conclusion: Formal and academic education plays an essential role in enhancing the individualsʹ knoHʹledge
and attitude. If is recommended to put effort on teachingfami!y planning programs and choose female
teachers in order to enrich the educationforfemale students.
