Lucien Goldman and Genetic Structuralism

In the present paper the ideas and particular method of Lucien Goldman, the second famous Marxist critic after Lucas, are discussed briefly. The points which are discussed include the following: Goldmanʹs particular definition of totality, his ideas about the creator of the literary work, the function of literature, his particular method in literary criticism called ʹgenetic structuralismʹ and its fundamental concepts, aesthetic criteria of literary work, the effect of different stages of capitalism on different types of novel, etc.. At the end, it is shown that Goldman who first put great emphasis on art and literature and considered it as the creator of the collective consciousness of the classes, retums to the same mechanistic theory of deep and surface structures.
