A Comparative Study of Clinical Diagnosis and Histological Reports of Oral and Jaw Lesions

Sta t emen t of Problem: Appropriate diagnosi s in ora l medi cine requires expert ise, ex perie nce and the use of severa l other re lated fields. One of the important fie lds in this domain is ora l pathology. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to invest igate the co nsiste ncy of c linica l diagnos is and path ological reports of ora l lesions in patient s referring to ora l path ological departm ent of Kerman denti stry sc hoo l du ring [995- 2004. Materials and Method : The prese nt research is a desc riptive- analytic and ret rospect ive study in which a ll of the samples referred to the pathology departmen t in Kerman den tal school during 1995 to 2004 were cons idere d. The corresponding da ta were analyzed by Chi-Squire and T tests using SPSS 13.5 program for statis tica l ana lys is. Results: The histo path ologic findin g and clini cal diagnosis were in the same line in 432 cas es (64.87%) The highest percen tage of proper diagnosis was found in the eight decade with the location in gi ng iva l lesions .T he lowest percentage of agreement was found in the third decade and in the lesions of mouth floor. Conclusion: Based on the findin gs of the present research, it seems that the cl inical diagnosis is not co ns iste nt with pathological finding in abo ut one th ird of cases. Therefo re, the stude nts sho uld be provided with suffic ient info rma tion abo ut the impo rta nce of ca reful record ing of the patientʹs charac te ristics and docum en tat ion of ora l lesions in the charts.
