Evaluation of Correlation between Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (VDO) and Facial Proportions

Sta tement of Problem: Estab lishment of VDO (Vertica l Dimension of Occl usion) is one of the most important factors in prosthet ic rehab ilitat ion of ede ntulous patients. There is no universally accep ted meth od in VDO determinatio n for edentulo us patients. Purpose: The aim ofthis study was to eva luate the relationship between VDO and facial proport ions. Mater ials and Method: In this desc riptive analytical cross-sec tional study, sixty four 20-30 year old dental students with class I occ lusion were se lected . The distances between subnasa l to submenta l areas in the maximum intercusparion, externa l comer of the eye to comer of the mouth, first one third eyebrows to the ala of the nose and outer comer of one eye to the inner comer of the other eye were measured . Two meth ods of meas urement were used: I) electro nic digital caliber to measure the indices on the face. 2) AutoCAD softwa re to measure the indices on the subjectsʹ digital photos. Pearson and Iinear regress ions tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The results showed a significant correlation between VDO and measured indices ( p <0.00 I) . The re was no significant difference betwee n the two methods. A minimal correlation was detected between VDO and the outer comer of one eye- the inner corner of the other eye dimension. A significant corre lat ion was found between VDO and the externa l comer of the eye- comer of the mouth distance. Co nclusion: It is concluded that some guidelines can be used for VDO dete rminatio n. The vertical distance between the external comers of the eye to the comer of the mouth was the most rel iable guidelines
