Estimates genetic parameters of economic traits and inbreeding coeffici ent in Fars native fowl

In this s tudy , performance records of the nati ve Fars chic kens co llected hy the Fars Native fowls Breeding Ce nte rs, during 1988 to 1999 were analyze d. The multi-trait an imal model and restr icted maximum likelihood procedure was used to estimate heri tabi lity, co rre lations be twe en trai ts and bree ding va lues . Estim ates of heritabilities we re 0.68, 0040 , 0.64 and 0.49 for body weight at 12 wee ks (BW12), egg number (Elv), egg we ight (EW) and age of sex ual maturi ty(ASM), respectively. The Cumu lative gene tic ga ins, after 8 gen era tio ns of se lec tion, expre ssed by reg ression co efficie nts o f breeding values on gen era tion for BW 12, EN, EW and ASM, were 22 .73,0 .17,0.04 and - \. 38, respe ctiv ely. A pedigree file co llected on 2 1245 fema le and male birds was used to ca lcula te the inbreedi ng coefficient. The avera ge inbreeding coefficien ts for all birds we re 0.048%, and ranged from zero to 25%. In this popul ation, 8% of the birds we re inbr ed, and ave rage inbr eeding coeffic ien ts fo r inbred bird was 0 .67% Due to re lative ly bigh herit ability of produ ct ive and repr oductive traits, it is possi ble to achie ve more pro gress in these traits usi ng appropriate ge netic se lec tion.
