Purpose:The regenerati on of axon and myelin sheet after crush injury of peripheral nerv es involves
interaction of sever al types of cell s, including Schwarm cells, mono cyte , macrophage and fibroblast Among
them , haernatogenous macrophages invading into the peripheral nervous sys tem playa major role in myelin
uptake during Wall erian degeneration.
Materials and Methods: In this study 35 C57IBL6 mal e mice 10 weeks old were used and classified in 7
groups of 5 mic e. The localization of epidermal-type fatty acid binding protein (E-FABP) in the mature
mouse sciatic nerve after cru sh injury was examined by immuno-light microscopy.
Results: Numerou s macrophage s immunopositive for both anti-E-FABP and F4/S0 a macrophage marker,
were found in degeneration process of sciati c nerve . Macrophages contained phagosornes of various sizes
and they were regarded as those activ ely involved in the phagocytosis of sciatic ner ve debrise .
Conclusion: The present detection ofE-FABP immunopositivity selectively in invading macrophages
sugges ts possible involvement of E-FABP and/or its fatty acids ligand in the process of peripheral nerve
regeneration.
