Evaluation of L-Carnitine Effect on the Testis Tissue of Mature Male Rat Exposed with Cadmium

Purpose: The evaluation of L- Carnitine effect on the testis tissue of mature rats exp osed to Ca dmi um Materials and Methods: This research was carried out on 30 mature mal e rats, weighting about 180-240gr. Animals were divided into five groups. The fir st group (contro l gro up) received nothing. The seco nd group (distilled water,O.3ml )ʹ third group (L-Camitine ,500mglkg Body Weight), fourth group (Cadmium. l mg-kg B.W) and for the fifth group (L-Camitine 500mg/k g B.W and Cadmium Img/kg B.W)ʹ were injected intraperitoneaJly for 16 days at an interval of 48h between subsequent treatments. Animals were sacrificed on day 17 after the first treatment. For the evaluation of the sperm count the right cauda ep ididymis was removed and imrnidiately immersede into lOml o f the HBSS.For the histol og ical e valuatio n, the right testi s was submerged into the 10% forrnaline . With immuno-hi stochemical (Ki-67) staining, the number of cell proliferation in the seminifero us tube s were evaluated, as well as the testicular histology evaluated by the Johnsen Sc ore. Results: Following co ntami nation with Cadmium .the rats showed decrease in the number of cuda ep ididymis spermʹ the number of cell proliferation and number of spermatogenic cell s in the seminiferous tubes. In addition L-Camitine cau sed increase in the number of cuda epididymis sperm , the number of ce ll prolife ration and number of spermatogenic cells in Cadmium induced group. Conclusion: Reasults demonstrated benefi cial effect s of L-Camitine treatment in cadmium toxicity on number of cauda epididymis spe rm and testicul ar tissue .
