British expansionist policies in the Persian Gulf encompassed a
variety of stages from the 18ʹ10 century up to World War l. Accordingly,
one must consider two important factors: British policies toward the
greater Europe as well as India.
Britain initiated its trade policies in the 19ʹ10 century through the
political influence of the Persian Gulf powers, including Iran in the
Ghajarid era. Accordingly, preserving the idea of free trade, exporting
goods to Eastern markets, absorbing wealth and investment, and
defending its commercial interests in India meant that Britain must place
significant value on the Persian Gulfregion.
Meanwhile, in the process of military attempts by Mohammad Shah
Ghajar and his successor, Nasser AI-Din Shah Ghajar, in reviving the
Iranian dominance over Herat through the military expeditions of 1838
and 1856, Britain invaded Iran. The conflict endcd with the ratification of
the Paris Peace Treaty and the imposition of hostile conditions on Iran.
The result was that Britain prevented Iran from penetrating into
Afghanistan, the backyard ofIndia.
