Water system integration can reduce both freshwater consumption and wastewater discharge of a plant. Determining the amount of contaminants and the limiting concentration are the key factors affecting reduction of freshwater consumption and wastewater discharge. This paper reviews some empirical rules for determining contaminants and the limiting concentration. The optimal water reuse network of a refinery, based on internal water resources is investigated. A distributed wastewater treatment system is considered to reduce freshwater consumption and wastewater discharge. The water-using network is simplified by combining some of the water-consuming units. The integrated system shows a 35% decrease in freshwater consumption and a 100% decrease in wastewater discharge.
