A Case Study on the Employment Status of B.A. Graduates from j Alzahra University in Library and Information Science During ^ the Recession Years

Official statistics show that the unemployment rate among women in Iran had  increased from 4.7 percent in 1996 to 20.7 percent in 2001. Determining the unemployment rate among the graduates of each university course can help university applicants to make the right choice of course. Therefore, this article studies the employment status of B.A. LIS graduates from the female-only Alzahra University between 1996 and 2001 (during which the highest rate of unemployment of female graduates was reached). Among 128 questionnaires sent to the alumni, 106 questionnaires (82.8 percent) were completed and returned. The research findings show that 85.8 percent of the graduates are employed and 91.2 percent work in librarianship and related fields. 54.2 percent of the alumni were employed in less than a year after their graduation. Finding jobs through family or friend connections was the most common method for the employment of the graduates (27.7 percent). 33.7 percent of the alumni are working in special libraries and 55.6 percent of the graduates working in libraries are in charge of all sections of the libraries they work in. Finally, some suggestions are made.
