The Eleven Approaches to Domain Analysis in Library and Information Science

This article introduces the theory of domain analysis in library and information science which was first proposed in 1993 by B. Hjorland and H. Albrechtsen. It then introduces the eleven approaches that Hjorland suggests for this theory. These approaches include: producing literature guides and subject gateways; producing special classifications and thesauri; research on indexing and retrieving information; empirical user studies; bibliometric studies; historical studies; studies of documents and genres; epistemological and critical studies; terminological studies, languages for special purposes (LSP) and discourse analysis in knowledge fields; knowledge about and studies of structures and institutions in scientific and professional communication in a domain; and knowledge about methods and results from domain analytic studies about professional cognition, knowledge representation in computer science and artificial intelligence. Librarians, information experts, and instructors and researchers in the field of library and information science, no matter what field they work in, can organize their services and orientate their activities using these approaches.
