Preliminary Evaluation of Seismic Behavior of Masonry Buildings with Shell Roofs

(domes, vaults and complex forms) in arid, and semi arid areas in Iran. Masonry buildings consist of sun dried bricks (Khesht), fired brick walls and dome and barrel vault roofs. Almost all buildings of this type have collapsed due to the failure of walls. Excessive layers of mud straw ou the roof for heat insulation also mereased the weight of many ofthese roofs. In this paper, a classification ofthese roofs is presented and also an attempt is made to review the seismic behavior of shell roofs in the past Iranian earthquakes. Asimple masonry building with shell roof was modeled with finite element and a response speclrum seismic analysiswas carried out for two d i fferent haza rd levels; DB E= 0.3 5g and MCE=0.45g, Based on the past experience and studies, it can be concluded that in cases where the supporting walls survived, the dome or vault roofs often performed satisfactory.
