Analysis of Information Storage and Retrieval in the Light of Semantic Theories

The Information age has changed the relations among (he phenomenon in their nature and complexity. The concept and meaning are two important issues in the Library and Information Science which are directly related to Semantics. This article focuses on Semantic theories- including Referential Theory of Meaning, Mental Image Theory of Meaning, Prepositional Theory and Filed Theory- and indicates the implicit and explicit effects of these theories to study the "relevance" and "representation" in this filed. To achieve this goal, some of the theories are selected and discussed. This article shows the importance of the process and context of the communication in understanding the meaning. Hjarlandʹs theory, Domain analysis, and the possibility of developing new Knowledge Representation tools are mentioned in this article as well.
