A Comparative Study of Assisted and Unassisted Keyword Search Patterns in the Google Search Engine from the Users1 Points of View

This comparative study addressed user satisfaction of unassisted keyword Search with assisted keyword search in the Google search engine. The methodology was one group pretest-posltest design. The instruments for data collection were 3 researcher-made questionnaires. The subjects under study were 30 postgraduate students at the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics, Shiraz UniversiLy. Findings of the study revealed that about 70 percent of suggestions presented in Google Suggest Beta as an assisted keyword search had a middle-to-higher relevance. Although there was no significant difference between precision based users oriented-relevance in the two search patterns, assisted keyword search led to a significant increase in precision. Generally, the second search pattern caused a significant increase in both the ease of use and the whole performance of the system in finding expected results .Although there was no significant difference between time satisfaction and search resultsʹ value, the total user satisfaction increased significantly with the second pattern.
