Romantic Aspects of HamidPs Poetry

Mehdi Hamidi Shirazi (1293-1365sh) the contemporary Iranian poet is famous for composing long verses. Although he is considered as a classical poet, but, by using quatrain and new themes in his poetry, he is elevated to the level of the best poets of his time. At the beginning of twentieth century, under the effect of French Romantics and because of Iranʹs intellectual and social atmosphere, Persian literature tended towards social Romanticism and great poets such as Nima and his followers appeared. Hamidi1 s poetry was in the same flow and therefore is prominent for its Romantic aspect. Although he has always been known as a Romantic poet, but elements of Romanticism have not yet precisely been studied in his poetry. All call him "the poet of love" and find his love poems pleasant and engaging. In this article, by pointing to the history of Romanticism in Iran, the general principles of Romantic poetry in Hamidiʹs book of poetry "After One Year" are studied. A definition is provided for each element of Romanticism that is found in his poetry and examples are given for them.
