ntroduction: There are a variety of proliferative squamous lesions of the skin in human papilloma viruses infection. Oral cavity and anogenital tract are the mucosal surfaces that usually become infected. New technology on recombinant DNA assays makes researchers able to diagnose suspected lesions of the skin by viral DNA extraction. Mucocutaneous HPVs are generally associated with warts. Sexually active persons with high rate of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and immunosuppressed patients like kidney receivers and pregnant women are candidates of HPV (wart) infections. The high incidence of wart virus infection in association of other STI suggests that anogenital warts are transmissable and in 2/3 of cases it appears through sexual contact. Anogenital warts are more common in women than men. Types of 6 and 11 of HPV usually produce warts but rarely may they be cancerogenic. However HPV types 16-18-31-33-35 are more cancerogenic, and occasionally may be responsible for the skin prolifeative squamous lesions (warts). In this issue of journal, Maleki M.D, et al report on a study of seroepidemiology of papilloma virus infection in HIV-1/AIDS and syphilitic patients. The selection of the target population for sexually transmitted infection (STI) and methodology of survey are correct and having a control group makes the study acceptable. Although there is equality of HIV-1 and syphilitic patients, two groups, challenging besides each other, but, patients in both groups are IV drug abusers. This is an important risk factor for HIV-infection, and so, the role of papilloma Virus infection becomes less important. In this study the diagnosis of warts made only by the clinical appearance. It is necessary to know, though clinical diagnosis of wart is easy, but in some cases PCR-DNA assay is essential and confirmative. All together the present work is the first extended study of papilloma anogenital wart in the region and this can be the beginning of large multicenter survey in the future.
