Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Issues in Khaqani Shervaniʹs Works

Medical terminology and the medicine-related concepts constitute one of the significant thematizing elements of Persian poetry. Rarely can we find a divan with no reference to medicine and treatment and we can certainly claim that from among all the well-known and prominent poets, Hakim Khaqani has surpassed others in providing information on medicine and in utilizing the terminology of this field as it is true about other scientific fields as well. He has surpassed even the doctors who are poet and the poets who practice medicine. Khaqani, the skilled poet from Shervan, like an experienced doctor, in his poems has used medical contents, many of which are specific to his Divan and are not seen in any other divan or work. This article attempts to elaborate the medical views of Khaqani with the aid of books on traditional medicine and the poems of other poets. Thus, in each case after stating a medical theory, first the old medical discussion on that subject is raised and then those works of Khaqani in which he has made reference to that subject are enumerated and finally, if the same view is seen in the works of other poets, they are also stated.
