What is the status of fear and hope, sorrow and delight as religious doctrines? Can we consider Islam wholly as the religion of fear and hope, sorrow and dread, assuming no place for delight and joy? Or vice versa: can we regard Islam as the religion of delight and joy, considering fear and hope and sorrow and dread as accidental phenomena? This collection consists of magister Mesbahʹs lectures, and holds that delight, sorrow and fear are desirable but not absolutely. Delight and joy are desirable as much as human beings seek to use the divine blessings in a right way. On the other hand, the fear and sorrow are desirable in Islam if they are positive, generative and effective.
