Socio-Demographic Factors and Pragmatic Acceptance of the Family Planning in Ahwaz

This research aimed at investigating how effective socio-demographic factors impacted pragmatic acceptance of the family planning responsibility among households in Ahwaz. The research questions were as the following: Who is responsible to accept performing family planning in the household (man, woman, or both of them?) Which socio-demographic factors may affect the family planning responsibility by man or woman? Whether or not the power inequality in decision making in terms of marital life can affect the acceptance of family planning responsibility? The sociological theories used in this research belong to Bourdieu and Blomberg, known as gender inequality theory. This is a survey-method research in which a questionnaire ^was used to collect data from a sample of 384 selected married women who referred to the health and medical centers in Ahwaz in the year of 2007. Findings indicate that the pragmatic acceptance of family planning responsibility is prominently considered to belong to women rather than to men. There is a significant relationship between the ethnic and decision making power of women in the context of performing the family planning responsibility and marital life. Moreover, findings based on Pearson correlation showed a significant inverse correlation between independent variables (decision making power and socio-economic status) and dependent variable (pragmatic acceptance of the family planning responsibility).
