Analysing the Impact of Oil Prices on Iranʹs Economic Growth Through Use of Asymmetric Cointegration

Oil price fluctuations and their impact on Economic growth have become major subjects of study by researchers following the oil crises of 1970s and more recent sharp fluctuations. This article studies the long term relationship between oil prices and Economic growth in Iran, using seasonal data for the period 1989-2007, by using asymmetric cointegration to analyse the asymmetric cointegration between these two variables. The study shows that in Iran, as an oil exporting country, the oil price fluctuations have an asymmetric impact on growth, meaning declining prices have greater impact on GDP than rising prices.
