Investigation on Methods of Increasing Propane and Butane Purity in South Pars Gas Refineries

Propane and butane, two important products of gas refineries, are used as fuel or feedstock in petrochemical industries. Due to the undesired effect of propane and butane impurities in downstream units, upgrading the quality of these products in gas refineries is a necessity. In this paper, the effect of important operating conditions on purities of depropanizer and debutanizer column products in those phases of South Pars Gas Refineries which are in service or under construction are studied via simulation. Besides, for phases under design, column redesign is used as means of purity improvement. Results show that manipulating the operational conditions can not lead to desired product purities due to not satisfying the design constraints posed by the designer. However, redesigning of depropanizer column by adding one theoretical tray and feed entry at 13th tray and for debutanizer column, adding one theoretical tray or changing the feed tray from number 11 to 14 are found to increase the purities of propane and butane to desired levels.
