Polygamy and Some Related Factors in Households of Kohgiloyeh and Boirahmad Province

Polygamy has been a practice since past times in Kohgiloyeh and Boirahmad (K&B). This social phenomenon increase reproduction rale and cause over- population and give rise to numerous problems in women life. This study was designed in order to determine rate of polygamy and related factors in modern households. Research method was descriphive 800 families with 15-20 years of marriage duration were selected by random multiple stage sampling among households of K&B. The Data were gathered in questionnaire and were analyzed by using SPSS. Findings showed that the rate of polygamy was 3.4 %. 77.8% of polygamous households had 4 children or more, that is significantly higher than monogamous households (P<0.05). Combination of cultural and social factors had significant relationship with polygamy such as place of residence, mean age of first wife, disuse of contraception methods by parents, women illiteracy, occupation of children under 15 years old, education and training cost of children, offspring desirable number from menʹs point of view, menʹs negative attitude towards family planning and male role in decision making about offsprings number. Based on these results the rate of polygamy is high for modem households. Changing the socio-economic and cultural related factors prevent undesirable outcomes of this problem in women life.
