Best Selection of Soil Model for FEM Settlement Analysis in Nahrein Dam in Tabas

Analysis method of earthfill dams in geotechnical softwares is very important. Finite element (FEM) analysis depends on load distribution, mesh of finite element, boundary condition and kinds of soil models and etc. One of influential parameters in FEM analysis is selection of soil model. If soil model is selected correctly, result of analysis is realist. Common soil models for FEM settlement analysis in earthfill dams are linear elastic, elasto-plastic and nonlinear elastic. In this paper, the result of FEM analysis a earthfill dam by GEO OFFICE/SIGMA software by assumption of kinds of soil models have been compared with monitored data (settlement gauge) and best of soil model have been selected. Earhen dam of the Nahrein project in Tabas (Iran-Yazd) has been used as an example of the discussion. Altitude of Nahrein dam is 48 meter and length of crest is 340 meter and volume of reservoir is 5*106 m3. The best of soil model for FEM settlement analysis of earthfill dams is quasilinear-elastic.
