Internet and Communication: Perceived social support and loneliness as antecedent variables

On-line environments have enormous influences on the social life and communication patterns of human being. Recently psychologists and sociologists investigated antecedents and consequences of this type of communication. This study examined a suggested causal model about relationship between use of internet, loneliness and social support variables. In this model, social support as exogenous, use of internet as endogenous and loneliness as mediator variables, were investigated. Participants were 439, girls (225) and boys (211), students selected from University of Shiraz. Participants completed Social-Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S), the Multidimentional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Online Intertainment Scale. To examine relaibility of mesures, Cronbach alpha coefficient and to determine validity, factor analysis method were used. The path diagram of hypothetical model tested by sequentional simultaneous regression analyses, according to recommended steps of Baron and Kenny (1986). Results showed that perceived social support was a negative and week predictor of internet using, and family loneliness was a positive predictor and social loneliness was a negative predictor of internet using. The results confirmed the medaitional effect of both type of loneliness (family and social) between the social support and the use of internet. Generally, results approved the important of social support and feeling of loneliness in use of on-line invironments.
