An Introduction to infill development

Infill development could be categorized in the theoretical frameworks of sustainable urban planning and smart growth approaches. It is defined as "reuse or recycling of lands and buildings which are empty, vacant or are not used efficiently". One of itʹs most important goals is to prepare housing and other urban amenities in inner city areas. In this case, comparing to greenfield developments, the need for infrastructures and services will be reduced, the use of natural resources will be optimized and living condition in adjoining neighborhoods will be improved. In the present paper, the theoretical position of infill development is discussed, and the relevant design and planning issues are also introduced. The research shows that proper access to urban infrastructures and services is the key to successful infill development. At the same time, residentsʹ participation and attracting investors and developers are also crucial.
