Socio-Economic Implications of Increase in Prices of Energy Derivities

Targetization of subsidies has been passed as a law by Iranian parliament and pursued by the government aiming at prevention of low price oil consumption and selling it at F.O.B price of Persian Gulf level. By this way, it is believed that the Country can mobilize billions of tomans which could be utilized to overcome the resulting inflationary tendencies. The proposed programmed is designed in such a way to distribute revenue earned on the bases of So, 30 and 20 Percent sharing between house holds, Producers of goods and services and the state. In addition targetization of subsidies given to essential commodities goods and services during the fifth development plan is also similarly approved by parliament and has to be pursued by the government. In this paper while discussing the technico-economic limitations of such policy, we shall analyse its various socio- Economic Impact. Taking into account all the considerations we show that this programme is counterproductive and has to be avoided. Instead the paper proposes a composite programme involving combination of price and non price policy reform to tackle such problems.
