Estimation of Genetic Parameters for some Economic Traits of Azerbaijan Native Fowls

The purpose of this study, was mainly to estimate the heritability and surveying genetic trends of some underlying economic traits in five selected generations among west Azerbaijan native fowls. In this research, which was carried out on performance of 4725 male and female chickens, data were collected through five primary generations between 1994 to 1999. Genetic parameters and variance components of body weight at 12 weeks, egg number, mean egg weight and age at sexual maturity were taken into consideration. Univariate animal model was used to estimate variance components with the help of Derivative-Free Restriction Maximum Likelihood algorithm (DF-REML). Heritability of the above traits were 0.18 ± 0.03, 0.18 ± 0.04, 0.21 ± 0.03 and 0.43 ± 0.8 respectively. Furthermore, in order to determine genetic gain for these traits, linear regression coefficient of breeding values on generations was calculated. Then, statistical signification was verified using variance analysis principles. Only the regression coefficient of breeding values on generations related to weight at 12 weeks and egg number were positive and significant between all traits. Results only showed the significant genetic gain for these two traits.
