Comparison of Mechanical Properties and Reliability in Casting Produced from Primary and Secondary Aluminum Alloys

In this research mechanical property, microstructure and reliability in castings produced from A413 and 356 primary and secondary ingots was compared . Results showed that strength in samples made of secondary ingots of 356 with 10-15% of scrap are lower in comparison with similar samples taken from primary alloy. This seems to be result of Cu and Zn elements which works as solid solution maker in alloy. The result tensile tests showed more discrepancy in casting made of secondary alloy in comparison with primary alloy. In the other hand the reliability of secondary alloy seems to be a critical point for using in casting industry. Results of the tension test on castings produced made of A413 secondary ingots with approximate 50% of scrap showed decrease of strength in comparison with castings produced from primary alloy. Also distribution of data showed reliability decrease in these types of ingots.
