An Investigation on Casting of Ti-6A1-4V

In this research, melting and casting of Ti-6A1-4V alloy was investigated. For melting a vacuum induction furnace was used under Argon gas protection. Melted alloy was poured into various ceramic shells (Alumina & zircon shells) and graphite mold centrifugally. After solidification, shell removal and cleaning surface quality of the samples was checked by visual test. Sample hardness was measured and microstructures were observed. According to observations, this alloy had a high reaction with alumina ceramic shell mold and the casted samples had improper surface quality and dimensional precision. Also it reacted heavily with the ceramic mold made of zircon. Result of qualitative EDS analysis represented elements of zirconium and silicon on the samples surface composition. Where as samples from graphite mold had a good surface quality, high dimensional precision. According to SEM observation, thickness of reacted layer was very thin and insignificant.
