TIMSS Results and the Quality of 4th Grade Mathematics Teaching in Iran

Considering the below average performance of Iranian 4th graders in TIMSS over a period of 12 years, it was deemed necessary to explore the causes among which the teaching methods are the most prominent. To this end, a sample of 70 fourth grade math classes from all such classes in five school districts in Esfahaan were randomly selected and observed using a modified version of the Van De Grifithʹs evaluation check list for teaching quality. Observers were trained to use the instrument. Results show that the quality of teaching is much less than desirable. Of five components of the "teaching quality" only two (secure and motivating learning atmosphrere and efficient class management) were observed to be above average. The others were well bellow average with the ʹappropriateness of teaching method" being of the least quality.
