Russia and the European Union: the Confrontation of Realism and Liberalism

The Russia-EU relations after the collapse of the Soviet Union has experienced several lips and downs. The bolstering of new Russia under Vladimir Putin and the enlargement of the EU to borders of Russia has created challenges for their relations. These challenges are mostly rooted in opposing insight and ideologies of two sides with regard to global affairs. What we understand from trends in Russian foreign policy is domination of realistic ideas while the European Union has always emphasized liberal ideas and procedures. Based on this, we can analyze Russia-EU relations on the basis of confrontation between realism and liberalism.
