Regional Geopolitical Crisis in Central Asia A Pretext for War or a Cause for Peace and Cooperation

Water resources in Central Asia arc certain to vulnerability. More than 70% of Aral Sea, once the fourth largest lake, dried up in last decade. This is a real threat to regional welfare and national prosperity. This was the first statement mentioned by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki- moon in the summit meeting of the Central Asian presidents, in Almaty in 2009. The exact recognition of the causes and sources of potential tensions and crisis, is the first step to the control and management of the crisis. Many international analysts and strategic centers believe that water shortage, the way to use the water resources of the world and the way it is divided among countries are the cause for the outbreak of war in the world. The world we live in, is entangled with water shortage in different forms and dimensions. Shortage of drinking water and the way it is being divided are the reasons that lead to the crisis and Central Asia has the potential. The paper here aimed at analyzing the geopolitical role that water plays as a strategic issue in Central Asia and neighboring regions (security area). It also views tbe literature concerning this security crisis in the region and regional and international attempts made to restrain the crisis, Some facts and realities existed in the region (lack of efficient management in water resources among countries, population growth, agricultural expansion, particularly cotton farms,....) are here referred to and at the end some comments are recommended to help the prevention of irretrievable consequences.
