Footprint of Cultural Invasion on the Textbooks Of Teaching English

Seeking superiority once made the Westerns assault on other countries to acquire more colonies. However, this kind of colonization diminished through time and progress in communication. To keep what they had achieved and to increase their field of influence in the target countries, the Westerns then decided to control the culture and thought of the nations, and direct them towards their own interests. So, a systematic cultural invasion started by the Westerns against the target countries. They made use of any kind of devices, such as dispatching missionaries, publishing books and magazines, radio and television broadcasting, and even international political and economical organizations for this purpose. Due to the extensive demand of the people in the developing and underdeveloped countries to learn English, the Westerns tried to take advantage of English teaching textbooks, which are published exclusively by them, for their culturally aggressive purposes. Some of the characteristics of such textbooks are as follow: spreading corruption and wickedness, discarding faith and faithfulness, exaggerating Western successes, and disregarding the position of family. Some instances of each of these attempts in English teaching textbooks are presented in this article.
