Effects of carbon equivalent percentage on wear resistance of austempered ductile iron (ADI)

In this study, the effects of carbon equivalent percentage (CE%) in constant silicon content on the transformation kinetics and wear characteristic of ADI were investigated. Ductile iron samples with different CE of 3.95wt% and 4.65% in constant silicon content of 2.4%wt, were cast. After hardness measurement, Pin on Disk test was conducted. Wear mechanism, topography of worn surfaces, subsurfaces and morphology of wear debris were examined by Scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that the wear resistance characteristic has direct relation with hardness. Decreasing the carbon equivalent increases the wear resistance in samples. The least weight loss was observed in samples austempered for 2 and 30 minutes and the maximum weight loss was seen in samples austempered for 60 minutes. Dominant wear mechanism in austempered samples was lamination and oxidation.
