The comparison of defense mechanisms and styles in patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and healthy people

This study was aimed to investigate and compare the defense mechanisms & styles in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) patients and healthy subjects. Sixty patients (30 female and 30 male) with GERD attending to an outpatient gastrointestinal clinic in Tehran, and diagnosed as GERD cases by a gastroenterologist and sixty other healthy subjects (30 female and 30 male) with the same age and similar entry criteria were selected as comparison group. Eeach group were evaluated on Defensive Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40). The means of variables in both groups were compared by T-test independent samples. The results showed that patients with GERD used more Immature Defense Mechanisms (IDM) and Neurotic Defense Mechanisms (NDM) than healthy group. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic disease that affects patients quality of life. Recognition of inappropriate defense patterns in patients with GERD, with emphasis on the effects psychological factors in this disorder, can lead to especial treatment in order to adjust defensive patterns.
