A study of probiotic properties of two species of Lactobacillus isolated from corn silage and rice bran and their encapsulation with alginate and chitosan for increase of their stability

Probiotics are living microorganisms which have health benefits for human and animals. The purpose of this research was to study the probiotic properties of isolated bacteria from com silage and rice bran. In this study, two species of Lactobacillus were isolated from com silage and rice bran in Iranʹs cold regions (Broujerd, Tabriz) by anaerobic culture. The biochemical tests were performed as: Gram staining, catalase reaction, growth at 10°c, 50°c, arginine hydrolysis, and carbohydrates fermentation. Acid tolerance and their growth against bile salt were measured. To increase stability against adverse conditions, encapsulation of isolated bacteria was performed by alginate and chitosan polymers. The results showed that the isolated bacteria are two species of Lactobacillus. They have ability to ferment carbohydrates. Only Lactobacillus from silage had the ability of growing at 50°c. Furthermore, these bacteria had the ability of growth at acidic environment and growth exposure to bile salt at interval times. The encapsulation of bacteria has increased their viability. The results showed that the isolated bacteria could be used as a probiotic for feeding domestic animals. Furthermore, the isolated Lactobacillus from rice bran could be used as food supplement for domestic animal.
