A Survey of Taghiyeh Concept and Approach in Imamiyeh Sect

This article intends to elaborate on the concept of Taghiyeh -the dissimulation of beliefs and the denial of oneʹs faith as a precautionary measure when facing opponents to safeguard oneself from physical and mental loss - while stressing its difference with hypocrisy and lie, and attempts to respond to the misgivings in this regard. This concept is also traced in other scriptures, including the Bible and Torah. Besides, this article scans this issue through the perspective of the Shiite Imams while classifying Taghiyeh into five categories, including obligatory, prohibited, recommended, permitted and execrable based on the religious sources and common sense,; what can help distinguish the permitted and prohibited cases in which one should resort to Taghiyeh.
