The Reasons behind the Presence of English Physicians in the Qajar Iran: Their Role in Political, Social, Religious and Scientific Issues of the Time

With the start of the 19th century and the advent of new empires such as Britain, France and Russia, which replaced the old powers, such as Spain, Portugal and Holland, the focus of the global power struggle shifted from the West to the East. Iran was thus positioned within the colonial competitive cycle of t, ese empires. From then on, formal and informal delegations from these governments penetrated the royal courts of Iran. British politicians and officials made it possible for many from different classes of British society to establish a presence in Iran. One of these groups consisted of British doctors who, after entering Iran, positioned themselves in places such as royal courts, embassies, consulates, and among the Iranian people. In this paper, weʹve tried to discover the reasons and the methods of the MDsʹ presence in the Qajar- ruled Iran.
