REVIEW ON SOCIO- ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF POPULATION AGING IN IRAN

The problem of population aging is manifesting itself as a new phenomenon in Iran due to several reasons including decrease in births and improvement in health, education and life expectancy. Since, young and old populations are more consumers rather than producers and so they are dependent on active and employed population, then both population growth and population aging will have adverse socio-economic effects on the society. In fact, population aging has become as a new undesirable phenomenon of development and also has become substitute for rapid population growth and consequences of fertility increase. This paper tries to investigate socio-economic effects of aging phenomenon in Iran in two parts; one, age structure, and the other, characteristics of the elderly people. The method used is documentary and analytical. Information and data are used from the Iranian censuses of 1335 - 1385(1956-2006) and United Nations population data.
