A Comparative Study of the Accuracy of General and Specialized Medical Search Engines in Retrieving Documents Related to Children Diseases

This research aims to compare the accuracy of general and specialized medical search engines in retrieving documents related to children diseases. It also determines which search engine, general or medical, has the lowest false drop probability.Ten keywords relating to children diseases were chosen after consulting pediatricians. These keywords were searched in five general search engines and five specialized medical search engines. In each search engine the first 15 results were studied. Research findings show that out of the total 1176 studied results, 225 were false drops among which 225 were content based false drops, 70 cases were repetitions, 16 cases were dead links and false drop was seen in one case. Medic 8, Medline Plus, Trip Database, Health Insite, Ask, AltaVista, MSN, Google, Yahoo, Medalogy had the largest number of false drops. Considering accuracy and false drop, general search engines had no meaningful differences with each other, but this difference was meaningful in specialized search engines. Medalogy had the least accuracy and highest false drop and Trip Database had the lowest false drop probability. Additionally, general search engines and medical search engines had meaningful differences with each other and the general search engines were more accurate than medical search engines.
