Ramp Metering is one of the popular Solutions for Reducing the Traffic Congestions and accidents in Arterials and highways in recent Decades. Many algorithms, such as ALINE A, Q- D, Closed loop, Occupancy and Fixed Time were developed to manage the system and online evaluation of the controlling rates. Various forms of ramp metering were implemented during the last years. It should be noted that all types of metering operation, could be implemented according to the following two modes:"One Car per Green Metering" and "Platoon Metering". This paper describes an attempt to quantify the impact of Number of lanes in entrance Ramps with these two methods of controlling on the Traffic flow in the Merging Areas of Highways. Simulation models were developed and the AIMS UN Micro-simulation software is used to estimate the results. Almost 60 different conditions with combination of "number of Ramp Lanes", "Traffic Volumes", and "Controlling methods" were simulated.
The results showing that: The "one vehicle per green each lane" controlling method, has a better affect. It has reduced the "delay time" about 30% more than the "platoon" controlling method in one lane ramps and 14% in two lane ramps. For the "average speed increasing", again the "one vehicle per green each lane" controlling method, has a better affect. It has increased the "average system speed" about 37% in one lane ramps, and 11% in two lane ramps. Controlling the ramps with one lane has a larger affect in both, reducing the delay time and also increasing the average system speed, than the ramps with two lanes.
