THE POSITION OF SMALL CITIES IN OFFSETTING THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION (A CASE STUDY OF ILAM PROVINCE)

Since in developing countries such as Iran, the spatial distribution of the population and spatial distribution of city centers have not been formed in a systematic and harmonious district-area framework, the increasing urban population leads to some problems. Since the population distribution pattern has a close relationship with political, economical and social functions, the centralization of activities and capital in some big cities will lead to population movement to these areas which will lead to the formation of population and function gap in middle levels and small city centers and thus the countriesʹ hierarchies will face some problems. So in order to create inequality in population distribution pattern, different strategies has been used until now one of which is the development of small cities. The present study tries to investigate the position of small cities in offsetting the spatial distribution of population through a case study of Ilam Province. The research method is library research and in the data analysis process two models of elasticity coefficient and entropy index have been used. The results of the study shows that the small cities of the area can play a very important role in offsetting the spatial population distribution and thus a special attention should be paid to them.
